2025 Watches

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
Watched: 28th May
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: That scene in the mirror room was trippy, I loved it. Was less enamoured with the plot compared to the first one, but eh, it was still pretty good.

John Wick (2014)
Watched: 28th May
Rating:4 Stars
Notes: Dude the choreography goes wild here it's so good. Also enjoyed the story of this one (poor Daisy didn't deserve that).

Tenet (2020)
Watched: 20th May
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Notes: My head hurts.

American Psycho (2000)
Watched: 13th May
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: I knew this was a satire, but it was a lot funnier than I thought it was going to be. The visual direction of this film was great as well. It was an absolutely wild ride, but it was a very engaging and thought provoking one. I'm not sure how people manage to misinterpret this one, although they may be doing so unconsciously.

Oppenheimer (2023)
Watched: 24th April
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: Out of the Nolan films I've seen so far this is undoubtably my favourite. It doesn't feel 3 hours long; the pacing was superb and the way everything flowed was wonderfully engaging. Murphy and RDJ were outstanding as Oppenheimer and Strauss, and so was Blunt as Kitty. The score is brilliant as well.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Watched: 23rd April
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: This is not nearly as bad as everyone would try and make you believe, although Malekith was an incerdibly underwhelming villain; a true waste of Eccleston's talents. The final resolution also kind of sucked, but the whole film was pretty alright. Loki carried.

Thor (2011)
Watched: 23rd April
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: The Thor-Jane romance was so forced I couldn't find it in myself to really care about it. Enjoyed Thor's development well enough. Loki was great; if we're being honest I understand why he did all of that.

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Watched: 18th April
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: Apparently Peter Seller played 3 seperate charcters and yet I couldn't tell; I think that's indicitive of something. A layered satire with some sprinklings of overt comedy and great helpings of subtler irony.

Captain America: The Winter Solider (2014)
Watched: 14th April
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: To me this is the least Marvel Marvel film simply because they stick the landing with the emotional stakes; everything is grounded in reality and the tension is palpable. I now get why everyone was going fucking insane over Steve and Bucky circa 2014.

The Avengers (2012)
Watched: 9th April
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: The downfall of the MCU's comedy started here, although it's not as noticable purely because the characters are different enough from each other. Thought the plot was decent.

Spiderman 3 (2007)
Watched: 7th April
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: I am fully aware that Raimi was forced to shoehorn Venom into this, but this should've been two seperate films. The plot would've been allowed to breathe, and it would've allowed more important moments their time to shine. I also wasn't the biggest fan of Uncle Ben's death retcon.

Spiderman 2 (2004)
Watched: 5th April
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: One of the most grounded sueprhero stories I've had the absolute pleasure of seeing. The narrative paralels between Doc Ock and Parker are palpable, and Peter's struggles with identity is just masterfully done.

Spiderman (2002)
Watched: 4th April
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: They decided to stare camp right in the eyes with this one and it fucks so hard. Everyone was an absolute joy to watch; Maguire really captured the awkward energy Parker just exudes, and you can tell Dafoe was having a great time.

Black Panther (2018)
Watched: 3rd April
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: I didn't seem like it as much as everyone else seems to which is a bit of a bummer. It strictly follows the 'MCU Origin Story formula' although it's a little less noticable. The pacing was slightly off, and some of the deeper story could have used some more development. Despite that, I still had a fairly good time watching.

Se7en (1995)
Watched: 30th March
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: It's haunting and debauched. The buildup is tense and the ending explosive. So many minute details within the narrative and the camerawork help to propell this film into a state of utter brilliance.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E (2015)
Watched: 29th March
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: Enjoyable and fairly comedic, although it falls into the trap of being really generic. Really enjoyed the character dynamics, but if they weren't as good I would've probably have hated this one.

Charlie's Angels (2000)
Watched: 28th March
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Pure 2000s camp bundled up into a fun, action-packed film. It was a little silly at times, but I stand by the assessment that a film doesn't have to be good for it to be enjoyable.

Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows (2011)
Watched: 27th March
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Just as fun and punchy as the first one, although it was prone to being a little much. I mourn the fact that Rachel McAdam's Irene Adler wasn't in this one, but Jared Harris as Moriarty absolutely made up for it; his performance was great.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Watched: 26th March
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: This was so much fun! The plot was a little out there but that adds to the charm. RDJ brought so much charisma and charm to Holmes; he turns him into such a likable little bastard. Jude Law works perfectly as Watson, and the two bounce off each other excellently.

The Dark Knight (2008)
Watched: 25th March
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Notes: I'm sorry to say that I fairly unengaged with the whole film until the last little bit. Heath Ledger as the Joker was just outstanding; he truly shone in every scene, but that was the only standout thing about this film. Bit bland.

Twelve Monkeys (1995)
Watched: 22nd March
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: Explorations of memory, sanity, deceptive ideas and cycles all wrapped up in a decent time travel story. It is very 90s in the visual department (especially during the portions in set in the future). Brad Pitt's performance was a particular highlight.

Inception (2010)
Watched: 22nd March
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: I went into this thinking it was going to be confusing. It wasn't really confusing, just thought provoking; I really like how ambiguous the whole film is; I might write up my thoughts and opinions on it after a rewatch or two. Quite exposition-y but that's to be expected.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Watched: 7th March
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: This film manages to combine intense horror and comedy fludily. There's some amazing character moments too. One of the only pieces of zombie media I've consumed so I'm not sure how well others compare to it.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Watched: 6th March
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Really engaging and dramatic; loved that there were hints dropped throughout that gave you an idea of the big twist at the end. Christian Bale and Tom Hardy were brilliant in their roles. Any confusion I faced can probably be chalked up to the fact that I haven't bothered to watch the other films in the trilogy. Maybe I'll do that at some point.

Midnight Cowboy (1969)
Watched: 17th February
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: Genuinely outstanding. Its grimy and dirty and sweaty and psychadelic and experimental; it has this continuous undercurrent of meloncholy and loneliness; it sits there, like a pit in your stomach, for the entire runtime. Despite the misery, the film manages to place a love, a kinship, at its centre which makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Trainspotting (1996)
Watched: 3rd February
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: Did I watch this just because Ewan McGreggor and Jonny Lee Miller were in it? I shall not comment. This film perfected the balance between serious and comedic; it has its share of artsy and trippy moments, but remains firmly grounded in reality. It's also a little vile (I'm looking at the bathroom scene the most when I say that).

Carlito's Way (1993)
Watched: 21st January
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: Could be considered the unofficial successor to 'Scarface' simply because Al Pacino is the main character and it's directed by Brian de Palma. In my very humble opinion this film is better than 'Scarface'; it's a beautifully doomed narrative with an amazing and tense shoot-out scene right at the end. That final monologue made me tear up. Also, Pacino is so fucking hot in this film.

2024 - I Watched 30 Films

My Bloody Valentine (2009)
Watched: 12th December
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Notes: I'll be honest, I only watched this one because Jensen Ackles is in it. While the gilet Ackles was wearing was criminal, Axel was the real villain of this film. The 3D effetcs made this film funnier than they probably intended. Entertaining but a tad boring; the only interesting kill was the one with a shovel right at the start, and the full frontal nudity came a bit out of left field.

Kamikaze Girls (2004)
Watched: 5th December
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: As much as the film wants to pretend otherwise, Momoko and Ichigo are gay; it follows the beats of a rom-com. It's incredibly heartwarming and fluffy and funny.

Saw (2004)
Watched: 12th November
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: This is probably the only one Saw film I will ever watch. I chose to watch this while eating breakfast; it wasn't my smartest idea, although it did spawn 'Toast and Homosexuality' (Adam and Lawrence are really gay but in a very tragic way). Kramer is probably the most hindged in this film, but his underlying ideology is still bad.

The Truman Show (1998)
Watched: 23rd October
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: I've decicded to categorise this as a psychological horror film. The true horror gets hidden under layers of comedy and carefully constructed facades; also, that man is realistically not going to live any more normal of a life outside, but at least he'll be free.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Watched: 29th September
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: As a standalone film it was entertaining, engaging, and emotional. I probably would've enjoyed this more (and subsequently given it a higher rating) if I'd watched more MCU films; I didn't actually know who most of the characters were, so I couldn't feel for them on a personal level. I like Thanos as a villain; he's undoubtably a bad dude, but I get can kind of see where he's coming from.

Doctor Strange (2016)
Watched: 27th September
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: Two of my friends made me see the second one when it was initally released in cinemas; at that point I hadn't seen the first one. Now that I've seen it, I'm not sure I was missing out on a whole lot. I do like Stephen Strange as a character, he just gets some mediocre films and not a lot of development.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Watched: 27th September
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: I reckon this film would've had more of an impact on me if I had actually watched any of the Maguire or Garfield Spiderman films. I know the main plot beats and villains so it was still alright as a standalone; it might get better on a rewatch.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Watched: 16th September
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Worse than the first but stands on its own as a fun time, although whether it's good is debatable. I watched both films ready to see the third in cinemas and then I ended up not going.

Venom (2018)
Watched: 16th September
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Notes: This film is great and people don't know how to have fun. I'm glad they didn't try to shove these guys into the MCU. An absolute romp; Eddie Brock is my favourite soggy bag of a man.

Fight Club (1999)
Watched: 8th September
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: I have to give it to the straight dude-bros, this films is actually really good. I was confused for a portion of it but I think that's kinda the point; it was all very surreal and trippy. It pains me to say this but Brad Pitt was so hot as Tyler.

Scream (1996)
Watched: 8th September
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: This is the only film in the franchise I really care to watch. I knew who the killers were before going into this (you can't go anywhere on Tumblr in October without seeing Billy), but it was still thrilling. It was also funnier than I was anticipating.

Dirty Harry (1971)
Watched: 28th June
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: The film itself is fairly engaging, and Andy Robinson's performance is outstanding; he's really good at making Scorpio a peice of shit. You're very glad to see him dead at the end. Robinson's performace is way more memorable that Eastwood's (although I may be biased).

Night at the Museum (2006)
Watched: 8th June
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: I love this film so much! Absolutely love the premise, and it's just so goofy. Robin Williams is great (as always), and you gotta love when Jedediah directly quotes Brokeback Mountain to Octavius; truly the world's greatest love story.

Fear in the Night (1947)
Watched: 1st June
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: I had no idea what was going on for most of the film which meant it was a bit of a trip. Watched it for DeForest Kelly (yes I'm shallow).

Cruising (1980)
Watched: 12th May
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Not entirely sure how to rate and review this one mostly because it's been a while since I've watched it. Recommend you watch it for yourself.

In the Gloaming (1997)
Watched: 10th April
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: RSL appears in another of his many sad films. The film was a little short for what it was covering (the re-establishment of connections in the face of a sisemic tragedy), but the messaging was conveyed well despite that. This is also RSL's only canon gay performance.

Mikey and Nicky (1976)
Watched: 30th March
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: It's so weird hearing Peter Falk swearing considering the only other thing I know him from is Columbo. A great film diving into the idea that a friend can change so much that they're no longer the person you love and that you sometimes have to get rid of them before you get dragged down as well. It's a little homoerotic and a lot tragic.

Candyman (2021)
Watched: 30th March
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: I've not watched the original, and maybe if I had this film would've been more impactful? I don't remember a lot of the story, but I do remember that the main guy took way too long to get his bee sting looked at.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Watched: 15th February
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: The whole cast rocks in this Shakespeare adaptation; yes this even includes Keanu who just chose not to act. Incredibly funny and charming. I've not actually read the original play but I'm hoping that it's as good as this film makes it out to be.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Watched: 15th February
Rating: 6 Stars
Notes: This gets the coveted 6th star because this is my favourite film ever; I really think this is one of the greatest things Hollywood has ever put out. Al Pacino plays a guy (Sonny Wojtowicz) who is really bad at robbing banks. He's also so fucking cute I'm going to eat glass. Just like the crowd outside you're rooting for him the whole way through, which amplifies the ending. Definitely going to rewatch.

Kill Your Darlings (2013)
Watched: 2nd February
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: To quote me on Letterboxd: 'The vibes carried'.
In retrospect, I remember exactly nothing about this film's actual plot. It was pretty to watch though. Radcliffe is also there with a somewhat shoddy American accent. Something I can say with some confidence is that the Dark Academia girlies were having a field day with this one.

Donnie Brasco (1997)
Watched: 1st February
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: This film managed to subvert most gangster film tropes by making me emotional over friendship. It's a pretty run-of-the-mill fare, but Pacino (like in most of his films) is great, and does a good job carrying most of the emotional weight.

Scarface (1983)
Watched: 31st January
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Notes: This film is a fucking trip in the greatest way possible. It's definitely one of those films straight dude-bros would put on their top 10 alongside American Psycho and Fight Club because 'hehe violence and drugs'; like those other films they're entirely missing the point of the film (in Scarface, it's the futility of the American DreamTM and the inability to carve one out for yourself despite all your effort). Pretty good!

Scent of a Woman (1992)
Watched: 22nd January
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Notes: It's mediocre by virtue of being a bit too long but still decently entertaining. The bits near the end were my personal favourite.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Watched: 20th January
Rating: 5 Stars
Notes: To quote me on Letterboxd: 'getting hit by a train would hurt less'.
This film hasn't left my brain since I watched it; the way this film encapsulates the collision of fear and love is just astounding. It's so raw. The ending was incredibly bittersweet, and I'm glad that Ennis decided to actually live for himself and what he wanted, even if it took a great tragedy for him to get there.

Point Break (1991)
Watched: 14th January
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: Johnny Utah is such a fake name I'm sorry. If you told me that's your name I'm automatically assuming you're a cop. Keanu was hot, Swazee was hot, there was a touch of homoeroticism, what's not to love.

Twilight (2008)
Watched: 14th January
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: My one (and only) foray into consuming Twilight and it was incredibly entertaining. It's not a good film by most metrics; I was laughing at moments where you're meant to be taking it seriously; you cannot make me listen to 'you're my own personal brand of heroin' and 'this is the skin of a killer, Bella' without me letting loose a laugh or two.

The Boys Next Door (1996)
Watched: 13th January
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: I genuinely don't remember much of what happened in this film but I do remember it being incredibly heartwarming and charming.

My Best Friend is a Vampire (1987)
Watched: 13th January
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Notes: Cheesy 80s comedy flick with RSL (Wilson from House); it's a lot funnier than I was anticipating. Vampirism is also an allegory for being queer. Rene Auberjonois is there just to be the cool mentor (who has a sick name by the way).

2023 - I Watched 8 Films

Pan's Labrynth (2006)
Watched: 10th November
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Notes: The creature design is stunning in this film. The story is captivating and heartbreaking; I'm glad Vidal was shot with no mercy. It's definitely one I want to watch again.

Star Trek: Generations (1994)
Watched: 9th July
Rating: 2 Stars
Notes: DOGSHIT FILM. The Data sideplot was a bit weird? Also, Kirk did not need to be here; if he was cut then the film would still work. It also would've been better for his character but that's beside the point. They also did nothing to discuss the Nexus which was a missed opportunity.

Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country (1991)
Watched: 9th July
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Notes: My favourite of the Star Trek films. It's the perfect send-off for the original crew and by proxy an entire era of Star Trek. The story is very engaging and reminicent of the Cold War; trying to find peace with somebody when all you've known is War and hatred and being able to reconsile it all.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
Watched: 8th July
Rating: 1.5 Stars
Notes: It's bad but still campy. You get some absolute banger one-liners and speeches (see Kirk and McCoy's speeches) but it gets bogged down with the rest of the film. The camping at the start was pretty fun I won't lie; some great banter.

Star Trek VI: The Voyage Home (1986)
Watched: 8th July
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Notes: It's the one with the whales; it's also everyone's favourite even when it's not. Everyone shone in this film, and it was so funny seeing them fuck around in 1980s San-Fransisco. You also get the iconic line that is 'they are not the hell your whales'. It's a great film to watch with other people.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
Watched: 8th July
Rating: 4 Stars
Notes: I thought it was pretty decent considering not a lot actually happens? It's the type of film that can't really act as a standalone; you need to watch it either after TWOK or before TVH or in the middle of both. Seeing Krik steal and blow up the Enterprise was very cool too.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
Watched: 7th July
Rating: 3 Stars
Notes: Considered one of the best Star Trek films but I found it to be just alright. I also don't have the capacity to really get the Genesis device. Either way, the story is compelling and decently entertaining. The ending was really emotional and well done.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Watched: 7th July
Rating: 2.5 Stars
Notes: Painfully boring until the last 40 minutes when the plot kicked in; I get it was a re-introduction to the original crew but it didn't need to take that long to go anywhere with the story. Bad, but still quite visually pretty.
