'Bullets' was an album I didn't bother to check out for a good while. My reasoning was 'nothing can top 'The Black Parade' so why bother going back to the very beginning?'. I was maybe 14 when I decided that and I stuck it out until now, 4 years later.
When I tell you 'Bullets' is my favourite thing My Chem has ever put out!
If I had to describe the album's general vibe, I'd say it's greasy and dirty. People like to call it 'raw' or whatever, but gross adjectives just feel like better descriptors; it feels like I fell over and have a bunch of small stones and gravel stuck in the cut and I'm in the process of washing them out.
It's aggressive from the vocals down to the instrumentation. The lyrics are, in places, a little cliche and trite, but it somehow works!
(If I'm being honest the lyrics issue didn't really resolve itself until 'The Black Parade'...)
It's definitely the least mainstream sounding album, but I love love love that sound. Post-Hardcore music is great, although it's not for everyone. Maybe it just sounds really good to me; maybe it's my kind of broken headphones masking some of the imperfections. I think the imperfections make it; the layer of polish their later albums get just wouldn't ever work here
